Monochrome Lightbox

Right it's here; December I mean, which, in turn, means we can finally mention the C-word. Normal rules are suspended and everything is allowed to be a little bit shinier than it was yesterday. So I'm starting off with a small confession. I have just ordered this. Yes I have.

I don't want to display it all year round but God knows it's so dark and miserable at this time of year that a little more ambient lighting wouldn't go amiss. Five years ago I wound a string of fairy lights round the banisters and there they remain to this day. This is partly because the only way to get them off would be with scissors, and partly because the hall has two pendant lights for some reason (probably something to do with it having been two flats at one time) and they are both on the same circuit. This means it's far too bright for a small, narrow Victorian hallway, so the fairy lights have been a good compromise.

This lightbox, which comes with lots of spare letters, will probably be used more for rude messages and swearing than sappy inspirational messages, with which I have no truck. I have always been a fan of Tracey Emin's sweary neons and when we painted the downstairs loo in blackboard paint, the children spent many a happy moment in there writing rude words and drawing rude pictures. Or maybe that was our parents, who knows….

I also think it would be quite handy to have by the front door for when himself returns from work; Your Turn To Cook Dinner or Crap Day Fetch Wine. Or possibly: It's been a crap day, I've drunk all the wine and you'll have to cook.

Then the next day it would just say #Hungover.

Anyway, it's a bit of fun for December. It runs on batteries or you can plug it in and it's available from lots of places (click the links above). Perhaps we should start an instagram lightbox thing for Christmas. I'll start as soon as mine arrives. Let me know if you're playing.

10 Beautiful Rooms

The last day of November and as the gales rage around the house, I want to say thank you to everyone. Some of you may be aware already that The Mad House won an (other) award at the end of last week. It has been an incredible year for the blog and, as we wander through today's 10 Beautiful Rooms, I would like to thank you all for your support. If you don't want to wade through my spraff you can just look at the pictures…

Found on hello.sukio.com

Found on hello.sukio.com

The award was from Vuelio (recently rebranded from Cision) where the blog was officially ranked No 1 earlier in the year. The party, which I was unable to attend, was on Thursday night when the trophies were handed out. I shall be off to collect it later in the week. This followed on from the Amara blog awards a couple of months ago when The Mad House won best design inspiration blog.

Now this isn't to show off but heck, I'm pleased! See I've even used an exclamation mark. For the first three years, I published a post every day  (sometimes twice), in September I made the decision to go to five days a week, which feels about right and it's great that you seem to agree with me. The blog has come a long way since it started and it has been both hard work and great fun.

As regular readers will have noticed, I had the decorators in recently. Partly because it was a couple of years since the last one and partly because it felt like it was time for a more grown-up look. The blog has settled into itself now and knows what it wants to look like.

In addition to the blog, my interiors consulting business has really taken off this year with lots of clients asking for advice and help on styling their homes and asking where to source new pieces. I really enjoy that side of things and it has been great meeting those of you who are regular readers, many of whom email me months later to show me what they have bought and how it looks in the space.

A few months ago I teamed up with a friend who does the same thing for offices and we are currently working at three of the biggest creative agencies in London. I have just come up with a really radical plan for one office which we are presenting next week. Fingers crossed she will go for it…

So what's next? Well the big one is that the book comes out next year. It's called Shades of Grey and is all about how to choose the right shade of grey paint. It might seem niche, but it's the question I am asked most often and I hope this will help. Many of you may feel that grey has been around for ever and are looking for the next thing, but I truly believe that it's a colour that is here to stay. It goes with every other colour and it makes everything look better.

In a small dark room, white can often end up looking drab as it needs natural light to bounce off in order to create that bright space you were looking for. Grey is often a better choice for those rooms. If you get the wrong colour, it's very easily influenced and you can warm it up with the items you put with it – wood, warm metals, soft pinks and oranges. Anyway, it's all in the book, which you can, if you were feeling super organised, pre-order via the above link.

I have tried to include lots of interesting and fun stuff in addition to the interiors business so I hope you will all find something to enjoy. There are lots of gorgeous pictures too.

In addition to the book, I have been working on a capsule collection of furniture which I hope will be coming out early next year (can't talk too much about that one yet) and I'm planning a little kitchen tweak. No surprises there. We did ours five years ago and while it still works really well and I wouldn't change the layout, we need a new hob, which means a new worktop on the island and well, you know how it is, one thing led to another and now I have a plan. It's not a radical change but a bit of a refresh.

After that? Who knows? I'm looking forward to 2016 and I hope you will all come with me on whatever it brings. I'm looking forward to meeting more of you at events and perhaps even to helping some of you with your own interior design plans.

In the meantime, enjoy these rooms; I like them all, I hope you do too and I'll see you tomorrow. We'll talk about proper stuff then, I promise. In the meantime, here is the 10th room and it features the new tile collection by Tom Dixon. I'd love to find a room to put these in wouldn't you?

The Amazing Features of Steam Shower Units

As technology develops these days, regular showers have developed into something more remarkable just like steam shower units. These units have amazing features geared not only to help you feel rejuvenated but for alleviating the stress and strain out of your body, boosting your respiratory well being as well as the appearance of the skin. Steam shower units also are designed with amazing features depending upon the brand, the sort of unit or how sophisticated it is. Here are several of the most typical yet helpful features present in the majority of the units today.

STATE OF THE ART AND ELEGANT LOOK. First of all, not like standard showers, steam shower units appear more advanced and stylish. It is an encased glass room furnished with everything that you need for any steam bath. However its stylish and closed feature isn’t just for aesthetic reasons or to make the bathroom a lot more high-class. It is encased in order to avoid the vapor from damaging your bathroom wallpaper or paint.

SHOWERS. These units also have showers. They are available in either handheld showers or overhead showers to help keep yourself feeling fresh throughout the day..

STEAM POWER GENERATOR. Clearly, because these units are really for steam baths, they have steam generators. This specific generator is a machine that allows the system to produce steam. There is certainly no steam shower unit which doesn’t have steam generators. In fact, your unit will be useless without one.

CONTROL PANEL. The Control panel displays the menus utilized to control the unit and many of these are electronic panels. You can turn the steam unit on utilizing the control panel also. Control panel also includes other switches that will enable other functions and features of the system to work.

OVERHEAD LIGHTING. Certainly, every steam shower unit has got overhead lights to maintain this unit dimly lit while you’re inside. The lighting is not necessarily very bright when switched on but merely sufficient to illuminate the room and enable you to see your environment when inside. Lights also add more into the therapeutic and warm effect within the unit.

FAN. Since it would be hot and steamy within the unit, the majority of units have fans featured also so that even if the air inside is humid and hot, oxygen can still circulate so as not to suffocate you.

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER. There is certainly no steam unit without having a temperature controller. This particular temperature controller normally can be seen in the user interface. It functions as what its name suggests which is to control the particular temperature or thermostat. You can actually modify the temperature of the unit regardless of whether you want it high or low using this selection.

Those are the usual but incredible elements typically found in steam shower systems. Each of them make your unit work better and get the advantages of the steam bath right for you. But it also relies on the sort of unit you’ve got. There are more highly developed units on the market too and they usually have more improved features.

The Househunter 27/11/15

It’s Friday so it must be time for a little nose around someone else’s house for a change. This week we’re starting off in The Old Courthouse, in west London. It’s on the market for £2,495,000 with Domus Nova should you be planning to win the lottery this weekend. I know I am.

Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 15.10.51

This two bedroom flat was originally court room no 1, although sadly the estate agent details don’t tell us if any notorious cases were tried there.

It was done up by Sigmar, a collaboration between interior designer Ebba Thott and furniture specialist Nina Hertig and if you like the look you can buy pieces in this style in their shop. Their design philosophy is to create modernist spaces that are warm and personal.

One of the ways they have done this is by mixing old and new. That giant wooden cabinet behind the kitchen is an unexpected choice but one that looks fantastic with the sleek modern cabinets.

The raw edge table also looks fantastic against the classic chairs and wall lights. While the black accents of the photos on the picture ledges bring some depth and definition to the space. There’s also quite a lot of colour in this room below but the overall effect is one of space and calm. Definitely need that lottery ticket this weekend….

In the meantime where shall we poke our noses in next? Shall we nip over to New York? Seeing as it’s their special day today? Worrabout this loft then? It’s on Sixth Avenue and it will cost you $2,250,000 via Sotheby’s International.

Awful isn’t it? Nothing to be thankful for there. There’s even a little courtyard through the arched windows (hands up whose brain went immediately to Playschool then… just me?). And we’re liking those dark grey walls. I might change the plastic chairs though.

Mind you, the garden is shared so I’ve gone off it rather. I’m an only child, I’m not very good at that. So, on balance, I’m thankful that I haven’t got to spend two million quid on a fabberless loft apartment in Soho, New York, with a shared garden. What about you?

Well, all right then, if we’re doing thanking, I would like to thank all of you readers for your continued presence. Now, enough soppiness, we’re British. Be off with you and go fill in those lottery tickets.

It's Friday so it must be time for a little nose around someone else's house for a change. This week we're starting off in The Old Courthouse, in west London. It's on the market for £2,495,000 with Domus Nova should you be planning to win the lottery this weekend. I know I am.

This two bedroom flat was originally court room no 1, although sadly the estate agent details don't tell us if any notorious cases were tried there.

It was done up by Sigmar, a collaboration between interior designer Ebba Thott and furniture specialist Nina Hertig and if you like the look you can buy pieces in this style in their shop. Their design philosophy is to create modernist spaces that are warm and personal.
