Match Your Walls

Choose a shade similar to your walls. This option is the least visually intrusive so it works well when you absolutely love your wall color, when you have a lot of other competing visual elements in your room that you don't want to upstage, or if you just want a serene, monochromatic look in your decor. This option seems to be the most overlooked because the idea of matching your wall color may come across as too "matchy-matchy," but when done correctly it is a perfect, elegant solution. Choose Neutral Colors

Choose a Texture                 

Consider the mood of the room. For a formal space, there's heavy silk or velvet (a great insulator); both are dry-clean only. More practical (often washable) options include silky rayon blends and cotton sateen. For a casual feel, there are billowy linen (generally dry-clean only) and crinkly crushed velvet. Length and Lining

Before you take out the tape measure, decide how high above the window you'd like the curtains to begin. Keep in mind: "Hanging panels higher than the window will give a sense of height to the room," says Cunningham. Designers often hang curtains about six inches above the window frame, but for a dramatic look, some go higher. Measured from the top of the window (plus the added inches of height where the curtains will hang from) to the floor. For a more traditional look, with the curtain slightly puddle on the floor, you'll want to add another two or three inches to your length. For a modern, crisp look, have the panel fall flush with the floor.
