My Top Ten Interior Design Tips #2

SOMETHING OLD

SOMETHING NEW

SOMETHING BLACK

SOMETHING GOLD

via neimanmarcus.com: the new chairs have wooden legs, the pictures are old and the glass reflects the light, the coffee table has metallic legs and a glass top and the black lampshade punctuates the space

This little mantra came about quite recently after I realised that that is, in fact, something I tend to do in every room and I think it always works.

Something old: I see so many people who start again when they move house, but I think it's really important to keep things that have travelled with you through your life. Whether it's an old chair from your Granny's house, or even an old chair from someone else's Granny's house that you found on ebay, a vintage piece will bring character to a room. It doesn't have to be furniture but can be objects for the mantelpiece,  pictures or books. An old wooden chair. Because actually, this rhyme cheats a little because it doesn't include wood. Every room needs some wood, so add a vintage wooden bench and you've killed those two birds.

Something new: there's always something new, just make sure it isn't everything.

Something black; a drop of black will anchor the space and bring definition. Otherwise it can end up looking a bit wishy washy. So whether it's the legs on the old stool, or a collection of picture frames (from yesterday's Personalise tip) then always try and include a little bit of black.

Something gold: it doesn't have to be gold but that rhymed. It should be metallic and that can be anything from a mirror to bounce the light around to a brass pineapple ice bucket or a shiny copper lampstand.

Those are the four rules within the rules.
