4 Things to Remember before Buying a Sofa

Buying a sofa can be confusing with hundreds of option to choose from. But before you make your choice, there are several things to consider including; size, frame, sturdiness, and color and pattern.

Below are 4 things to consider before buying a sofa:

Size

The size of your room is a good guide for the size of your sofa.

• Make sure its size doesn't overpower the room or impede the flow of traffic. Measure the entire room, especially the wall against which you will place it, before you go shopping.
• A tight back sofa works well in a tiny space because of its low profile.

Frame

A sturdy frame means a long-lasting sofa. Soft wood, such as pine, is low-cost, but it may warp or wobble after five years. Pricier hardwood (kiln-dried oak, ash, or beech, for example) is more durable. Avoid frames made of particleboard, plastic, or metal; they may warp and crack. Legs should be part of the frame or held on with screws or dowels (pegs) — not with glue alone. To test frame strength, lift one front corner or leg of the sofa off the floor. By the time you've raised it six inches; the other front leg should have risen too. If it's still touching the floor, the frame has too much give; it's weak. Source: GoodHousekeeping

Sturdiness

Quality sofas should feel solid and heavy. Flop around on one to test its sturdiness, then lift it up by the corner and shake it a bit. If it feels light or wobbly, take a pass. Look for a frame made from a kiln-dried hardwood such as oak, alder, birch, maple or, alternatively, high-quality hardwood plywood or marine plywood. Once you have decided on your fabric or leather you can then choose from a range of colors and, in the case of fabric, patterns. To suit your décor and your taste and also bearing in mind what is practical (pale colors are not always suitable for homes where there are young children, for example), you can either choose neutral shades and classic patterns or bold colors and contemporary patterns.
