The Househunter 13/6/16

black and marble kitchen

A study in black, white, marble and wood, this is a great house that just needs a few personal touches from the eventual buyer. You know the sort of thing – a few rugs, photos and pictures on the wall. The vendors have clearly taken the estate agent’s advice to depersonalise VERY seriously.

It’s the perfect blank canvas. It’s in Battersea and is on the market with Rampton Baseley (via On The Market) for £2,200,000. Mind you it’s massive – six double bedrooms, a double reception room, family room, wine cellar and cinema room. Fancy it?

If not what about this? It’s a bit of a contrast but if the one above was your city home then this can be your weekend retreat. Built around the floor plan of a medieval house, this six bedroom property is on the market with Strutt & Parker for £1,300,000.

That painting on the wall is of Henry VIII and was done in the 16th century. Imagine him staring down at you as you munch your cornflakes of a morning. It’s the only surviving wall painting of him and was discovered only a few years ago. The ArtBanc has valued it at £250,000, which goes some way to explaining the price of this house.

It has all been extensively modernised and refurbished and is full of original features including a Tudor fireplace, and some Victorian and Georgian elements from period renovations and extensions.

vintage kilims in the bedroom

There’s something rather cosy and fabulous about that big stone fireplace and layers of kilim rugs on the floor. I would very happily wake up in here on a Saturday morning and read the papers in front of the fire. Then you could wander next to to this bathroom. I love bathrooms that look like rooms with baths in, rather than all sleek and fitted which, while indoubtedly more water-friendly – are never quite as cosy as this. This is a glass of wine, light the fire, read a book sort of bathroom don’t you think?

So, where are we spending our lottery money this week people? Town or Country? Or are we thinking big and going for both?
