Chisel and Mouse 3D Cityscape

chisel and mouse london

Last year I told you about Chisel and Mouse, the company making detailed sculpture of famous buildings from around the world. They have now added to their range with these amazing cityscapes. A 3D map of a city reproduced in perfect detail  on a scale of 1:5000.

This one is London, as you can probably tell even without my little Lego soldier standing guard. You can see the Gherkin and the Shard and the new, rather more controversial Walkie Talkie building too.

Each one measures 30cm high and wide and is about five centimetres deep. They cost £195 and you can choose from cities including London, Venice, Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam. The perspex frame means they can either hang on the wall or sit flat on a table – but be warned you might lose hours just staring at them and not get any work done.

The first step is the makers (brothers Robert and Gavin Paisley) create a cad drawing using satellite maps and images of the chosen area. It's like Google maps on steroids. That's the mouse part.

Then they use a 3D printer to make the mould into which they pour the plaster. Then, finally, it's finished off in fine detail. That's the chisel part.

When I wrote about them before I said they would make great presents. I think these might be even better. While the company very kindly sent me this one (because I had raved on these pages) I'm already thinking about buying Venice as that is the city of my soul. Then I would need Paris as I lived there for three years many moons ago. And I went to Berlin last year so I would need that one too. You could build up a collection (buying perhaps one a year) and create a fantastic wall display of cities you had been to. There's Rome too. This could become an expensive habit for me. I think I better just make sure I never go to Chicago…

You can see all the cities they make here and here is what it might look like if you had a collection of them. What do you think?
