10 Beautiful Rooms

Living in a typically narrow North London terrace, I find I can become obsessed with square rooms. I once had a neighbour who said she could never turn left in her house and I know exactly what she meant. This room, which is in the home of interior stylish Cille Grut, is appealing not just for the decor but because it looks so wide and square and spacious.

I could totally make that arrangement of sofa, coffee table and stools (not chairs) but there would be a wall directly behind it. Not that I'm complaining, I'm just feeding my eyes on this beautiful space. And, of course, that gorgeous dining room behind.

Next up, on our weekly stroll through 10 Beautiful Rooms, are these giant murals from Mura Innovations. I'm very taken with the idea of a forest mural in the bedroom but that might be a step too far for him outdoors. Having said that I had a client this week who lives in the countryside and we/I/she decided that an image like this would be amazing in her hall which has no windows but which would lead you through to the sun room which has a view of nothing but trees and fields.

Back to another favourite theme of mine – internal windows and patterned tiles. And, while we're looking note the lighting arrangment. I have often suggested this to clients with no space for bedside tables and lights or for people who aren't sure about moving the lights in case they want to change the layout of the room. This works perfectly; you can buy an outlet with as many cables as you need and, with the addition of a couple of ceiling hooks you can light whichever part of the room you want.

If you do this over a kitchen table and then want to move the table out of the way for a party, this is the perfect arrangement.

From that light and bright kitchen to this loft space created by the same design team. Look how that panel slides up and down to reveal the workings of the kitchen.

Moving on to, and I hate this phrase but you will know what I mean, my latest design crush. Fiona Lynch is based in Melbourne and I just love her work. The next three kitchens are all by her and each one has a different metallic element not to mention that all important dose of black.

I can't call a favourite can you? The dark greys above with the brass column or the black and white with the copper island support below?

Or perhaps this monochrome kitchen with splashes of silver to bring in some added light.

This kitchen below, which could be cold if it was just black and white is transformed by the warmth of the wooden table, the plastic chairs and the rattan lamp – all of which bring in different textiles and feel to the space.

This final picture was the inspiration for my bathroom which also has a fireplace and an alcove either side. Somehow mine didn't come out looking quite like this (not least because I had to put a loo in one of the alcoves) but it's still one of my favourite images and definitely reminds me why I wanted (and don't have) a frameless shower surround. It's one of those things that seems unbelievably expensive at the time and then afterwards you are left wondering if you could have compromised elsewhere to have been able to have one.

So that's this week's selection. What do you think. I hope they have inspired you with ideas for your own homes.
