10 Beautiful Rooms

It is a truth universally acknowledged  – in Denmark at least – that good design makes people happy. And, as the nation responsible for some of the greatest pieces of furniture in the last 100 years, I, for one, am not going to argue with that. So, while it might feel strange to be looking at, and writing about, pictures of beautiful rooms while the world rages outside, I think it might provide some comfort, a small lifting of the spirits perhaps.

This is, after all, an interiors blog. A little bit of escapism and perhaps, today more than any other, it is ok to retreat into a beautiful place. A place where calming colours and gorgeous objects can allow us all to catch our breath. To, in the words of Kate Winslet on accepting an Oscar: "Gather" and just take five minutes from the fray before we have to go back out there.

To that end I have "gathered" some calming colours, some serene places to soothe the senses. Above the home of Danish photographer, Ditte Isager, whose gorgeous green wall is like a breath of fresh air.

Or these rooms above and below that belong to Gwyneth Paltrow. On any other day I might say that this all white kitchen is too austere and a little bit soul-less but today I am finding it calming. Although as I look at it for more than a couple of minutes I am starting to think about large plants, leather door handles and making sure this cabinet below has a prominent position.

Another white room below, this time in Morocco. This one has just enough leather, wood and black touches to stop it feeling stark. Perhaps we should all go and lie on that sofa till the dust settles. Maybe Morocco wouldn't be such a bad place to do that.

You know I love a patterned tile and now, now that the legs feel a bit shaky, I'm rather loving the idea of a seat in the shower. Just, you know, for those moments when it all feels a bit overwhelming and you need a sit down. We were planning to redo the bathroom (not sure where those plans are for the time being) but if/when we get to that I may seriously consider a little seat in there. Could always use it as a shelf when we all feel a bit stronger again.

A little bit of dark for you now, because sometimes pale isn't all interesting and these soft blues and greens can also be very restful.

This is a refurbished Georgian house in Whitechapel, built in 1797, that is now a boutique hotel with space for up to six guests. Perhaps we could go and hide there till everything blows over. In 1797 that is…

Well if that doesn't work, here's a lovely restful bedroom. If in doubt go back to bed. This looks like a nice one. I'll see you later. Perhaps someone could pop up with a tray of tea and toast in an hour or two. Toast always makes everything better doesn't it.
