Well, well, well, I don’t know about you but I seem to have snapped right out of the five stages of grief (somewhere around no 4) in favour of slightly maniacal laughter. If ever the feeling that we just have to carry on (not buying the calm bit, sorry) then the last few days have shown that. I think laughter hysteria is currently all we have and at least it burns calories.

So it’s a new month, time to start again and I think I now feel ready to carry on and let everyone sort themselves out around me. I have signed things and joined things and rallied around things and now I need to get on with my own life. And, perhaps, helping you plan the interiors of yours. It’s not that I don’t care, more than I can’t keep up. And as the situation is moving so rapidly, it feels sensible to carry on strolling along at my own pace as at least three fights will probably have happened and broken up by the time I get there and it’s not as if there won’t be a fourth waiting to start.

I know that none of us have any idea where “there” is at the moment either which is all the more reason to, as Voltaire would say “cultivate our own garden”. I remember that quote from my French A level and so I just looked up and I found this:

“The enlightened playwright and social critic Voltaire (1694-1778) concluded his satirical tale Candide (1759) with the observation that the violence and plunder of kings could not compare with the productive and peaceful life of those who minded their own business, “cultivated their own garden,” and traded the surpluses with their neighbours”.

Seems like a good plan if you ask me. Anyway, in order to tend gardens, we must have houses. So here is one in London for you. It’s an art deco apartment that is on the market with The Modern House in Crystal Palace for £595,000.

The headlines have changed about seven times since I started writing this (and I’m a fast writer) I think we’ll leave it here and perhaps something approaching normal service will have resumed next week…. Stay calm guys and don’t drink all the Gin.

Yes, Vancouver is the most unaffordable housing market in Canada. But determined home buyers are still trying to get their foot in the door, in order to get in before it's too late and the lowest rung on that ladder is even further out of reach.

 

The average price for all residential properties in Vancouver is $889,100 ($1.5 million if you want a detached home). And if you want to avoid paying mortgage insurance premiums, you need to come up with 20% as a down payment. For the average consumer, it'll cost more than 20 years to come up with a down payment, according to a report by Generation Squeeze titled "CODE RED: Rethinking Canadian Housing Policy."

 

Can't wait that long? You'd better find some family members who are willing to contribute to your housing fund.

 

Shaun Zipursky, a broker with City Wide mortgage services in Vancouver, says that they're seeing many more gifted funds than they have in years past, particularly for young professionals.

 

"We're seeing a lot of clients that are coming in with massive amounts of gifts, six-figure gifts," Zipursky says. "So families are really trying to help out in keeping their kids in the housing market in the areas that they want to be in."

Pocket Organiser Wall Storage

In times of stress I retreat into list-making (currently: buy suitcase, run for hills or stay in bed and eat scrambled egg on toast). When I have done that – making sure to include a few things I have already done so I can start by ticking things off and feeling a positive sense of achievement – I turn to tidying. It’s not particularly Freudian to realise that it’s the old Creating Order out of Chaos syndrome.

If I can’t tidy up the world, then at least my desk and drawers will be organised. It’s what a new hashtag on instagram would call #smallsolace and I think it helps. Not least because it gives you something else to think about and, because it’s better than staring blankly at the walls. And because life must go on and it’s much easier to make it do so if you can find a pen and blank piece of paper.

So when I found these wall pocket organisers by Normann Copenhagen the other day my heart skipped a tiny beat. I want them all over my house. They’re like a freeform version of the uten.silo which I have always loved but which is a) ferociously expensive as it’s a design classic and b) a little too rigid in its form.

You can have as many as you need of these. You can arrange them however you want. It’s double joy – first you decide how you want them on the wall and then you get to play with what you put in them. This is never-ending displacement activity. I’m feeling better already and I haven’t even bought any yet.

The other great thing about these is that they are perfect for those in small spaces. I have always said when you run out of horizontal you should go vertical. Use the walls people. Otherwise all they’re doing is holding the roof up which is, I grant you, a not insignificant job, but they might as well multi-task while they’re at it. After all, the rest of us have to.

Using the walls is perfect for me as, although not naturally tidy, I find cluttered surfaces distressing. My house is full of tidy clear tops and drawers from hell, cupboards where things fall on your head as soon as you open the door in what you thought was a fairly minimal room. And no I don’t need Freud for that one either.

But with clear surfaces and beautiful walls displaying everything in co-ordinated, beautifully arranged pockets, I can live with that.

Onwards and Upwards.

4 Tips for Cleaning Roller Blinds

Cleaning methods for your roller blinds depend largely on the material that your blinds are made of. Here's how to keep your roller blinds looking their best.

Below are 4 tips for cleaning roller blinds:

Checking
It is important that you follow the care instructions of the blinds, to ensure that you are washing your blinds in a way that won't damage them.

• If the care label indicates that you can wash the blinds (plastic/vinyl blinds), or your blinds are very dirty, you can thoroughly clean the blinds in a bathtub.
• If the care label indicates that the roller blinds cannot be washed, you'll need to spot clean them, meaning you'll only clean the spots that are visibly dirty. Source: wikiHow

Removing
Remove the rolled up blind from the mounting hardware. I'm sliding a knife behind the bracket to release it. This is a Level or blind and they can be removed in a SNAP! (they're 12 yrs old btw)
Be sure to remove the roller mechanism if you can. You want to safeguard it from the water to avoid damage. Source: SnapGuide

Vacuuming
If your roller blinds will not stand up to being washed, you'll need to spot clean them. This is where you only clean the bits that are visibly dirty.  You can start by vacuuming your blinds as outlined above to remove most of the surface dust and dirt. Source: HomeImprovementPages

Washing
Use the brush attachment on the vacuum to gently brush over the surface and vacuum away any loose dirt, dead bugs, etc. Next, fill the bathtub about half full of warm water.
Add some laundry detergent to the water and mix together until a few suds begin to form on the surface. If the blinds are white, a small amount of bleach can be added to the water as well.
Next, carefully lay the blinds in the tub. If the blinds are long, it is okay to loosely layer them in an accordion fashion. Allow them to soak in the soapy water for a couple of hours.
Next, start at one end of the blinds and gently wipe them back and forth with a soft cloth or sponge. This will help remove any remaining dirt and/or stains. For tough stains, scrub them gently with an old toothbrush. Drain the sudsy water from the tub.
Fill with clean water and rinse the blinds. Repeat until all of the soap is removed. If soap residue remains on the blinds, it will act as a magnet quickly collecting dirt and dust.
If a partner is available to assist, the blinds can be held up and rinsed with a shower sprayer for quicker soap removal. Lay the blinds over a drying rack or outside on a clothesline until they are completely dried. Attach them back onto the roller and reinstall them over the window. Source: HowToCleanStuff

Drink Plenty of Water

So I think we all need a sit down don't we? Whichever side of the fence you are on (and let's not get into that here) a nice sit down with a cup of tea/bottle of Gin, depending on your preference and time of day, is always a good idea.

I have been waiting to write about summer furniture and barbecues and all things hot and jolly for weeks but every time the sun comes out for ten minutes and I think we're there, it disappears again in another downpour.

This is the perfect solution. It's a summery chair that can live indoors. Perhaps you have a conservatory, or a sun room, or a covered deck. Even an area to sit in the kitchen, in which case you can move the current wintery upholstered chair into the spare room and replace it with this for the next few months.

BIsazza Tiles

Last week I was invited to the Bisazza tile showroom in London to have a go at doing my own tiling. Now let's be clear on one thing, there was no preparation or grouting involved. This was purely a design thing. A chance to see the endless possibilities that are available with tiles.

Why not use tiles as a headboard? Bisazza Ardassa Ivory design by Tricia Guild.

We tend to view tiles as the simply the useful bit that stops the water ruining the walls but there has been an explosion in tile design in recent years and simply shoving a row of white metro tiles up seems like a wasted opportunity.

Given that we all tend to have the same things in our bathrooms – white baths, basins and loos, the opportunity for creating something with a bit more personality is limited. Even in the kitchen, where the splashback is a necessity rather than an object of beauty, it's all about practicality.

But perhaps it's time that changed. We should be more adventurous with our tiling and use it as a chance to bring some art into these rooms. Because I think we can view it like that. Take a look at some of these images and tell me they don't set you dreaming.

Now Bisazza is at the high end of the market, I grant you and it won't be for everyone because, in addition to the materials, you will need a specialist installer, but think laterally. Firstly, you don't have to do the whole room. When we did our bathroom we fell in love with some silver tiles but they were so expensive we could only afford to buy six so we have three over each basin. If you have one basin, you're already down to three. So consider creating a small panel not the whole wall.  Or bringing in texture but in one colour as below.

Or you can create a pattern within a larger area of tiles. Or, if you choose a simple pattern then you, or your tiler, might well be able to do it yourself. Use some of these images to inspire you.

And, talking of our bathroom, it needs redoing now – mainly because various bits have fallen apart – and I have been toying with the idea of creating a black-tiled counter for the two basins to sit on. After last week, I am wondering about adding a cheeky gold monogram in tiny mosaic tiles: his and hers. Let's bring back the humour and the irony. What do you think?
