Machine Washing Curtains
Remove all hardware from your curtains before washing. When washing curtains, be sure to check the care label first. If you’re in doubt about your curtains, try spot testing a small corner with a mix of water and a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or liquid dish soap. Most washable curtains will need to be washed in cold water with a small amount of laundry detergent. Delicate lace and sheer curtains may benefit from being hand washed or machine washed inside a mesh bag. In a pinch, I’ve washed delicate curtains inside an old pillowcase that is tied shut tightly. Caring for Lace
Remove dust from lace curtains by tumbling in the dryer on the air cycle. Many new lace curtains are hand- or machine-washable. Follow the label directions or gently wash in cool water. Use detergent made for fine washables.
For extra body, dip freshly washed lace curtains in a light starch solution. For a soft look, re-hang the curtains without starching while they are slightly damp. Check the care label on sheer curtains before ironing them; you may be able to dip them in a starch mixture and hang them again without ironing so that you don’t ruin the material. Remove Wrinkles from Sheer Curtains
After washing sheer curtains, homeowners should ensure that they remove any wrinkles from their delicate drapes. One way to accomplish this is to remove curtains from the dryer while they are still damp and re-hang them. This allows wrinkles to fall out as they finish drying.
In addition, homeowners may be able to use an iron to press some sheer curtains. To avoid any risk of damage, double-check the care tag before ironing. If ironing is appropriate, turn the curtains and use a low heat setting. For some sheer curtains, homeowners can dip them in a starch mixture and hang them without ironing to protect their thin material. The care instructions specify whether this approach is viable or not for sheer draperies.
Another way to restore sheer curtains to crisp condition is to soak them in Epsom salts after a wash. Start by laundering sheer curtains in accordance with the specified care instructions. Fill a sink with cool water and add one cup of Epsom salts. Be sure to stir the water to dissolve the Epsom salts completely. Remove the curtains from the washing machine and submerge them in the sink for a few minutes. Take the curtains out of the solution and hang them up to drip dry without any wringing or twisting. Spot-Clean Shades
Before you treat any splotches on Roman, pleated, and other nonwashable fabric shades, they’ll need a dusting. Your vacuum does this best, but you can use a lint roller for smooth shades or a soft brush or even the vacuum’s brush attachment for pleated ones. Lower the shade and whisk away debris on both sides, from the top down. For stains or fingerprints, mix a squirt of mild dishwashing liquid into a cup of warm water (or grab some foam upholstery cleaner, if you have it). With a dampened sponge, lightly work only the suds or foam into the stain. Rinse the sponge, wring it well, and blot away the soap; then, dab away moisture with a clean cloth; air-dry.
