10 Beautiful Rooms

Welcome to Monochrome Monday as it may henceforth be known. We're starting off today's edition of 10 beautiful rooms with this Ralph Lauren bedding although, much as I like it, I'm not suggesting you spend $995 on a cushion. I know! Mind you it's not difficult to find lots of black and white around so it's an easy look to emulate. The key point being that you can mix up the patterns (whatever your mother says) when you are keeping to a strict, or restricted, colour palette.

We're really ramping up the black here with walls and furniture to match, but those large windows make it chic not gloomy. Points to note: plants look great against a dark background, paint your skirting boards and add some natural leather or vintage wood to soften it all.

This is a project by the French design team Hauvette Madani who have decorated this entire apartment in black and white and doesn't it look great? It's such an easy combination to work with as you can add splashes of any colour you like; look at the grey stripy rug and see how the blue book really stands out for example.

In this room, they have reduced what could be a stark combination by adding warm brass and not the colour of the cushions. An accent shade which has been echoed throughout the apartment. See the kitchen and bathroom below. I particularly like the use of the tiles in the back of the niche. There are always a few left over and that's a good way to use them up don't you think?

This apartment below is like one of those Russian dolls. Each room opens up to one that is similar and appears to give a slightly distorted reflection of the room behind it. It's the perfect way to decorate a flat like this as you are bound to have the doors open so you need the rooms to coordinate.

Next up is the Sebastian Cox kitchen from Devol. I just love it and although I have just painted my kitchen cupboards black I'm now rather taken with the idea of stained natural wo0d (in this case English beech) as has been done here. The copper handles are a great touch too.

Staying in the kitchen this is a great way to bring in a wooden seat without losing any storage either. I have a row of cupboards down one side of my kitchen and was always gutted that there was no room to include a sofa. If only I had thought of this…no I can't, really I can't start again…I really can't…well not this year anyway…

This studio flat is a perfect example of how to zone a space. The grey wall pulls everything together and keeps it as one room but the rug clearly defines the living area and the wooden table divides the kitchen and sitting part. The pendant lights don't need to match and don't need to be symmetrical because they are highlighting different areas and doing different jobs, which is a point worth bearing in mind if you are looking for pendant lights any time soon. Finally we started in bed, we're finishing outside. Seems logical. These swivel doors are just gorgeous for those of us who live in enormous spaces with no need to put furniture anywhere near the edges of the room. Exactly. For the rest of us we can just look at this picture.

Happy Monday everyone. I hope it's a good one.
