Goooooooooood Moooooooooorning Campers. Welcome to Monday, I trust it finds you well. Or at t least upright, which is always a good start for January I find. A gorgeous selection of rooms for you today inspired, I have to admit, by plans for my kitchen tweak. This has begun – the bifold doors have been painted in Railings which is soooo much better than white. It frames the garden so well and even makes that end of the room seem cosier.
No you can’t see yet, you can wait until I have the rest of my ideas together. In the meantime, have a look at these. We currently have white walls and cupboards and Down Pipe open shelves. The question is do we paint the cupboards Down Pipe or Railings?
I love this patterned floor in the image above but we have white painted floorboards all over and that’s not going to change. However, we need a new shower tray as ours was very cheap (buy cheap buy twice) and now wobbles dangerously underfoot. I am thinking of making it into a more of a wet room and therefore having the floor half tile and half wood as in this picture.
The other brilliant detail is the tiled kickboards. That is the detail that nails this room. It shows that the designer/owner has really thought about what they doing. The obvious thing would have been to tile up to the kickboard and then just paint it, but this is brilliant. I have done this with tiled bathroom floors- using a row of tiling instead of skirting – but have to admit that it hadn’t occurred to me to do it with kitchens. Bear it in mind anyone who is tiling soon….
From the same home, comes this dining room. This could be a template for my design rules which I shared with you all before Christmas. So: natural wood, something black and something metallic for starters.
This kitchen was created by the same company and you can see some of the same tricks. The patterned tile floor to create a separate kitchen area and the reclaimed wood to add character. I love the improvised chandelier – that’s another thing I would steal if I had the ceiling height.
The same tiling trick has been used in this apartment below where it acts like a rug.
By contrast to the rooms above, the kitchen below seems a little cold and I think it’s the floor. Much warmer with reclaimed floorboards or with patterned tiles don’t you think? That would really give it a little more personality, especially if, like me, you couldn’t really be trusted to keep that magnificent bowl of white flowers alive for long.
Another of the questions currently swirling around my brain at the moment is the exposed brick one. Are we over it? Have we just seen it in too many restaurants to bring it into our homes? Or, actually, do we not know anyone in real life with exposed brick, in which case it’s fine. And, if we do decide to chip off some plaster, do we leave the bricks au naturel. I fear white might be a bit overdone, but look below… black. Now suddenly black painted bricks are looking quite modern and fresh aren’t they?
Moving out of the kitchen, what about this for a good way to ease into using a dark grey paint on the walls? I think it’s a really clever idea and you could do it with any colour you like – navy, dark green, what about bright pink?
Imagine for example, this trick done on the room below. It’s a great way to incorporate a bit more drama, and show off your artwork, without having to commit. I would lay money on the fact that if you do this, you will eventually cover the whole wall.
I found this image on My Scandinavian Home which, alongside The Mad House, was named in the best blogs of 2016 by Domino magazine, a huge US site and proper printed magazine, which was a great accolade to kick off the year.
Talking of going dark and, coming back to the painted brick above, another look I love is wall panelling. I had always assumed that if you don’t live in Georgian house you can’t have it, but I’ve seen it added in other houses to great effect. Not, of course, a modern house, but if you live in anything period – by which I mean Edwardian or Victorian – then I think it can work. I would be keen to do it in the library on the wall that doesn’t have books on it, just to finish it off.
You can’t really see that wall in this picture but it might be a good way to wrap the room. It’s allowed to feel smaller because it’s a library and I would only do it halfway up but it might work really well. What do you think? It’s at the bottom of a fairly long list but I would be interested to read your thoughts both on this and the exposed brick trend.
Thanks for dropping by, I’ll meet you in comments below. Have a good day everyone.
