Edi: The First Rechargeable Portable Floor Lamp

Edi 1

Yes you read that right. Now perhaps it's because I live in an old Victorian house that the sockets never seem to be in the right place. In one room, the largest in the house in fact, there were only two plugs in the entire room when we moved in. One was in a corner under a window and nowhere near where anyone might actually want to sit, while the other was in the other corner and a similar amount of use.

That room became the spare room. One socket disappeared into a wardrobe and the other was fine for the printer, but meant that there was no possibility of a bedside light, which was tricky as it's mainly used by our parents, who don't want to be leaping (I use the word loosely) in and out of bed to turn lights on and off all night.

For ages we managed with trailing sockets which are ugly and a trip hazard until, finally, at the end of last year, we got round to having a couple more sockets installed on either side of the sofa/bed.  If this light had existed then we needn't have bothered. This light is cheaper than an electrician.

And look at it. It's so handsome too. Very often, these clever gadgets are just that. Whoever designs them doesn't really bother with the style of the thing but the Edi light is rather handsome.

No wires no worries

Now sadly it hasn't yet gone into production – it's on one of those sites where inventors go for backing and then, if they get it, the thing gets made and, if you've stumped up enough backing, you get the light. You can find all the details about Edi on the indigogo site. I saw it on Twitter the other day and immediately went over to investigate.

I can confirm that I have paid my £145 and I will be getting one forthwith. Well in July. Hopefully. Assuming they get the remaining 15 per cent of investment they need. No pressure people, but it's a good idea and I need one so if you can help make it happen…

Do you need some more details? Well you can use it inside or outside. You can adjust the brightness, height and angle. The battery lasts for eight hours. It is made from powder-coated steel with (wait for it) copper details and it's rustproof. To charge it you plug it in for a while and then take it wherever you need to be.

Edi has also been chosen to be featured at the Fuorisalone at the Salone del Mobile in Milan from April 12th to 17th 2016 so if any of you are heading that way, check him out. In the meantime you have just under three weeks to back this project.

What do you think? I really hope it gets made. Do you like it?
