Dream Master Bath Must-Haves

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

The bathroom of your dream house should be a relaxing haven.  So much so that you won't have to go to a spa for an escape. As you list the things you need to do as you design your bathroom, don't forget to include the following:

Photo by Mitchell Orr on Unsplash

Consider putting in a sauna
Live somewhere cold or just love a good sweat? Embrace the wintertime traditions of Nordic countries with your very own sauna at home. Saunas don't need to eat up too much space, and having one installed may cost less than you think. Source: Forbes

Have adequate ventilation
Of course, if your clothes and shoes are shower-adjacent, you're going to need a good bathroom exhaust system to pull the moisture out of the air quickly. Don't skimp on your bathroom ventilation. Preventing mold growth and peeling paint is worth spending the extra few dollars on a good vent. Source: Houzz

Look at a relaxing whirlpool bath
If you like both long soaks and water massages, then a whirlpool is a must for your master bathroom. Most tubs are water-jetted, pulsing water through the openings, but air-jetted units are becoming more popular because the pipes behind the jets don't collect water residue, which can promote mold growth.

Test the tub for comfort before buying — take off your shoes and climb in to see if you can stretch out. Look for a tub with at least six jets. An acrylic finish is more durable than fiberglass. Source: BHG

Add impressive fixtures
Plumbing fixtures are the jewels of the bathroom because they're metallic and can add a dramatic effect to any space, just as jewelry can to an outfit. There are a plethora of finishes and styles offered by today's manufacturers, from brass to bronze and all metals in between. Keep in mind your motif and maintenance as you choose your bathroom fixtures. Elaborate gold fixtures probably won't jive with a beach-inspired bathroom and may also require more cleaning than you're up for. Source: HGTV

Looking for the things you need to create your dream bathroom? Choose from the quality fixtures, bath tubs and saunas on our website and feel free to contact us anytime for more information.

Eco-friendly Tips to Green your Bathroom

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Are you renovating or even building your bathroom from the ground up?  You've probably heard about eco-friendly rooms or ways to green up your home, and maybe you've even done some research or taken tips from friends who've done the work.  Bathrooms are good rooms to try some eco-friendly products.  Bathrooms are generally among the smallest rooms in the house, but some of the most wasteful, especially when it comes to water consumption.  Going green in this room even over others can make a big impact on your environmental footprint!  Here are some tips and ideas to get you started;

  1. Cabinetry in your vanity or shelves can be a great opportunity to "go green". Most cost effective cabinets are made with plywood panels or fibreboard, both of which are most often made with a formaldehyde based adhesive.  Exposure to this known carcinogen can result in allergic reactions, respiratory issues and irritation to skin.  Look instead for products made of sustainable wood, like bamboo, and low or no VOC finish labels.

  1. Water consumption is a hot topic, and the bathroom is a great way to reduce waste. If you have some enthusiastic showerers in your home, get a shower timer.  You can set it to go off at a predetermined time, making family members more aware of their shower use, nag free.  Another great way to reduce water is through your toilet choice.  There are wonderful (scentless!) compost toilets that use no water at all (some choose, in turn, to use composted waste in garden beds), and even options where the sink is built in and water from hand washing goes directly into the toilet tank to be used for flushing.  You can also find faucets with built in timers so you can set how long water runs before it goes off (for forgetful toothbrushers).

  1. With sustainably harvested wood available in a variety of options, wood floor can be the greenest option out there. Be sure to look for a label that says it's approved by the Forest Stewardship council so you can rest easy that the wood comes from well managed timber that isn't endangered or protected.  Recycled or salvaged wood floors are also a great option.

  1. Use greener linens and even green up your shower curtain! Look in most bathrooms and you'll find a PVC plastic shower curtain; while it's in your home it can release toxic chemicals and once it's time for a replacement, it can't be recycled.  At the dump it tends to leach chemicals into the ground and unfortunately, into our water supply.  Think about hemp or PVC free plastic as better options.  For linens, choose organic cotton or bamboo.  Conventionally grown cotton is one of the most pesticide laden crops on the planet, damaging soil, groundwater, and the health of those who work the fields.

  1. Support organic farmers and artisans by purchasing their bath and shower products for your home, as well as recycled toilet paper. It might not seem like as big a change as a composting toilet, for example, but think about your consumption through the year, and you'll realize that it's steps like this, over time, that make a big difference.

Bathroom Safety Tips to Keep in Mind

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Bathroom Safety Tips

Your bathroom is a workhorse in the house and it's also a space where we can retreat for a relaxing spa-like session in the evening.  It can be one of the only quiet spaces in a household with few people!  It's also a place where, for a variety of reasons, safety might be an issue.  It pays to be aware of hazards in your bathroom and how to prevent injuries.

  1. Keep electrical grooming tools away from water. This is a big one, and we often see it ridiculed in comedies, but electrocution is no laughing matter.  Don't use your hairdryer, electric razors, or other styling tools anywhere where there's a chance you'll drop them in water and find yourself at risk for a shock.bathroom-safety-precautions
  2. Make sure that bath mats are secure against the floor. Bath mats are wonderful to step out onto after you've showered or bathed, but they can also offer a slipping or tripping hazard.  The best mats have a rubberized bottom so that they won't slip and end in a bad fall.
  3. While showering you've no doubt noticed that the tub can become very slippery. A great idea is to invest in a rubberized anti-slip mat for inside the tub.  Some of them even come with suction cups on the bottom.  You can either leave it in place if everyone showers, or drape it over the tub to dry if there's a chance someone will be having a bath instead.
  4. Wall handles on the tub are also a great idea, especially if your household incorporates little ones or seniors. This can help not only to prevent a slip but also to help people with limited mobility in and out of the bathtub.  In serious cases of limited mobility, it's also a great idea to have a handle installed by the toilet.
  5. It's not nice to think about anyone walking in on you when you're using the bathroom, and most of them have locks on the doors. If you have children, however, you might want to rethink this when they're small – especially before they're school aged.  A small child can get into a lot of trouble behind a locked door and they might not be aware of how to unlock it.
  6. Keep sharp objects tucked away in a high, safe location. This can include razors, nail clippers, or tweezers.  It's best to keep these objects hidden from sight from young children who may hurt themselves trying to use them.
  7. Keep your light bulbs changed. There are so many obstacles and hard surfaces in a bathroom that a fall can become disastrous.  Lighting is key, so you'll want to ensure that burnt out bulbs are replaced quickly, and that the lighting you have is in a good location to light up any potential hazards.

The inevitable, of course, happens no matter how safety conscious we are. However, with a little foresight and a keen eye for potential hazards, your bathroom can be made a lot safer.

The project sits across from the Calgary Stampede grounds and will feature an apple orchard on the street level as a public space between two sleek towers. This is the 2nd collaboration in Calgary between LDC and FRDI; 6th and Tenth is now complete and occupied.

Mini Hall Makeover

Regular readers will know that if there is one room in my house I regularly complain about it's the hall. It's so narrow there's no room for any furniture and, since there is a suspended floor, there is no underfloor heating either. For the last eight years it has been a white door, white walls…

3 Bathroom Safety Tips for the Elderly

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Elderly people are prone to falls, especially in the bathroom where the floor can get slippery. It's important to keep the following tips in mind to ensure the safety of the senior citizens at home.

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Install grab bars
Many elders use towel bars or shower/tub features to hold onto while climbing in and out of the shower/tub. Towel bars are good for holding towels but aren't built to support weight. Instead, install grab bars in easy-to-reach places to help support balance when entering and exiting the shower or tub.

Grab bars are best suited for elders with good upper-body strength who are able to hold onto grab bars while moving or standing. All grab bars should be slip-resistant ('grip' surface bars are better than those bars with high gloss finish), color contrasted from the wall for visibility, and securely fixed to the studs of the wall for adequate support ("bolted on" bars are preferable to suction cup bars, which could easily slip away when body weight is applied).

Where's the best place to install grab bars? Look where the elder normally holds onto when entering or exiting the shower and place the grab bars there. The trick is not to change one's behavior (which is difficult to do) but to make behavior safer. Source: ConsumerAffairs

Set a comfortable water temperature
This reduces the potential for scalding. A comfortable temperature is around 90-to-100 degrees Farenheit. Obviously, the right water temperature depends on the individual, (48.88 Celsius). Water that is hotter increase the potential for burns. Source: Seniors.LoveToKnow

Use appropriate lights
Lighting throughout the room should be bright with a minimal amount of glare. Plan on a ceiling fixture or fixtures to provide general room lighting, but you should also add task lighting around sinks, tubs and showers. Source: SeniorHomes

How to Make Do When Your Bathroom Is Out of Service During Renovations

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Homes equipped with more than one bathroom seem much less like a luxury and more of a necessity when it becomes time to have home renovations. Residential plumbing systems aren't always upgraded by the request of a homeowner. You might unexpectedly require bathroom renovations after experiencing water leakage and you learn that all of your bathroom's plumbing has to immediately be replaced. When you need a porta potty you have to make a decision quick. Will one porta potty be enough for you and your family to share and how long will it be until you get full use of your bathroom back? Here's how you can survive when your bathroom will be out of commission for a while.

Bathroom-under-renovation

Use the Kitchen

This is not to suggest that you use your kitchen to alleviate biological needs. Instead, you can easily use the kitchen sink to brush your teeth, wash your hands, and groom yourself in the morning. Get a small mirror to put right behind your kitchen sink so that you can watch yourself as you trim your beard or apply mascara. Of course, your kitchen sink needs to be completely clean and free of dishes prior to use it for personal grooming purposes. It might be a little weird applying your acne medication in the kitchen, but it's as good a place as any until your bathroom finishes being renovated.

Rent a Porta Potty

For people who have only one bathroom that is completely out of service or a home in which multiple bathrooms are being gutted simultaneously, porta potty rental is required. Simply put, you are going to need a dedicated, sanitary location to relieve yourself. There's always the option of getting a composting toilet to use in the interim, but you might still lack privacy if your bathroom is out of commission. There are also makeshift toilets that you can make with five-gallon buckets, toilet seats and kitty litter, but clean-up is going to be very unpleasant.

Get Friendly with the Neighbors

In the event that it is only going to take less than 24 hours before your bathroom becomes accessible again, you may just want to ask the neighbors if you can use the restroom at their home. Of course, you should already know and be friendly with your neighbors before making such a lofty request. If you limit your intrusions to a very short period of time, it is likely that your next-door neighbors won't mind letting you come over to take a shower and use the facilities.

You probably won't know how important having full access to your bathroom is until your contractors start pulling out fixtures and taking down walls. If you live near gracious neighbors, you might only need to walk a few extra feet to be able to use the restroom. For people who are expecting renovations to take more than a few days, just rent a porta potty or have an outdoor restroom trailer set up on your property for the time being.
