10 Beautiful Rooms

As part of our August break/update we are revisiting some of the most beautiful rooms of 2016, I hope you will like these ones. Since I posted this picture I have acquired my own fiddle leaf fig for the kitchen and, while it’s not a splendid as this one, it’s still alive three months on and – pause for applause – it’s GROWING.

There is something about this room above that I just love. Is it the huge fiddle leaf fig that is like a giant indoor tree. Or the rather elegant day bed juxtaposed with the battered sideboard. It combines my love of adding the unexpected to every room, or, as I read somewhere this week: it’s about putting the wrong thing in the right place. With a table and chairs this would be a great kitchen. The parquet floor brings a refined touch already but by bringing in a velvet day bed the whole space is elevated.

Of course, this image has been styled for the photograph, but there is still plenty of room for a table and chairs to make this a functional space as well.

I do love a glass cabinet too. This one looks great in this kitchen (note the plant as well) and, again, the juxtaposition of the upholstered chair with an entirely unexpected fabric on it. Think of putting a Liberty lawn chair in this room. That pattern is generally a little too floral for me but if you added it to to a room like this it would work really well.

Now these two rooms have been done by the American comedian and chat show host Ellen de Generes, who, it turns out, has a thing for decorating and is actually really good at it. Apparently she just buys houses, does them up and sells them and she’s done it so many times you can buy the book now.

I’m a fan of both these rooms – the monochrome palette with touches of wood and leather are perfect and it’s a similar story in the room below. A bit of vintage or slightly worn wood works wonders in a modern space.

Same here but with some concrete added in for a bit of edge.

It’s not that I’m anti-colour you understand, I just prefer a calmer palette with interest coming from all the different textures.

Now this picture below is actually about selling the chair (which is from Anthropologie) and I love the chair but it’s £1,400, which is steep for a chair so, as it’s been so beautifully styled, I included this picture in today’s post instead. It does look like a comfortable chair though. Which it should be for that price.

And now for a little bit of dark… just look at that navy blue on these walls.

And finally, an image from the book which was featured in Architectural Digest last week and I think this is one of my favourite pictures in it.
