The Househunter

Let's leave the city and head for the Norfolk countryside to start our house tours this week. This three bedroom, single storey (award-winning) property is on the market for £89,000 via The Modern House.

It's set in an acre of land and was completely in 2010. According to the blurb: "it is one of the finest examples of residential architecture of the last decade. A series of simple, vaulted spaces over a single story, the design relies on the refined use of materials such as shuttered concrete and painted brick".

Yes, I know that's the architectural bit for you. Let's have a look and imagine how we would arrange the furniture if it were ours… Basically it's sleeping at one end and living at the other and every room has a view over the south-facing gardens.

First up we need those plants to grow. Fast. Imagine a profusion of plants allowing a view out but, to coin a phrase, bringing the outside in and blurring the distinction between the two spaces. That's the key to this I think.

Now I've been through the brochure twice and can't find a picture of the kitchen for you but it's described as a modest, functional space with a skylight above. There is also a concrete bath that was designed specifically for the space by the architect David Kohn and which has garden views. So, whaddyafink?

Now where? Well seeing as you all liked the Ilse Crawford designs from Monday's 10 Beautiful Rooms, how about a whole house designed by her? This is Dinder House in Somerset, which is on the market with Knight Frank for an undisclosed sum (if you have to ask etc …) but somewhere between four and five-and-a-half million judging by its position on the grid. Anyway, we shun actual prices here on The Househunter for we are governed by fantasy money and aesthetics. We care only about the looks and design rather than the grubby business of actual money – and if we can glean idea that might work in our own places and within our own budgets, all the better…

It is a regency house that was fully restored by Crawford to create a contemporary family home that a young family with four small boys could live in and not have to tip toe around.

It's set in 21 acres and includes, as well as the main house, a two bedroom lodge and a coach house. The latter is a blank canvas so you could have fun with that. Well I could anyway…

In her book A Frame For Life, Crawford explains how she wanted to break away from the traditional layout as the needs of a 21st century family are so different from that of an 19th century vicar. So her first big and bold decision was to turn the ballroom (no I don't know why the vicar needed a ballroom either) in to the kitchen putting it right at the centre of the house.

This makes so much more sense than trying to convert what one assumes was a series of small rooms comprising kitchen, scullery, pantry, laundry and larder into one modern kitchen. Particularly as these would undoubtedly have been at the back of the house and therefore with no views to speak of.

Instead, the former basement kitchen was turned into a playroom with an AGA for added cosiness. The home office was deliberately made to not look like an office and the formal drawing room, in normal circumstances probably not used very much, was given a table tennis table and turned into a space that can be used every day.

It remains to be seen if the new buyers keep the same layout but it certainly makes sense to me. What about you?

And before we leave, just look at that wallpaper below. I love how it seems to grow up the wall rather than being the usual repeat pattern from floor to ceiling.

I could cope with that bathroom too. Although I might add a rug and an armchair. Not because I actually want to sit in the bathroom to read my book but because it would bring a little unexpected cosiness to this vast room. And, let's face it, you could keep the water away from the soft furnishings in a space this size.

Traditionally kept to bedrooms and formal living areas, there's a growing trend for sheer and motorised curtains in open-plan living spaces. The most style-savvy homeowners are also embracing muted colours and folk- and floral-inspired prints. "We will be seeing a shift towards 'beautiful' fabrics and a softness that moves us away from minimalism," says Toby Gray, director of BQ Design. Organic grey shades now offer a modern update on cream and white, and richer hues can be introduced to complement a room's colour palette. The only rule? New Shop Discovery: India May Home

Well hello dere…. black, white and shades of grey with texture of leather, fur, brass and iron. What more do we need in a lifestyle store? Meet India May Home, the self-styled ScandiBoho store that mixes Moroccan charm with Nordic cool to come up with this mainly monochrome collection.

If you love the rustic elements of the souk but find the colours a little overwhelming for your own interiors then this is the place for you. The store is divided into four collections: monochrome, Moroccan, Artisan and, the aforementioned ScandiBoho.

You can see the highlights in these images from the silver and brass platters to the large tray tables and wire stools and chairs. Check out the Khanda hairpin bench for one example of this moroccan-scandi mash up.

What do you think? This simple palette will always work in any interior scheme and it’s easy to add more colour if you want to – think emerald green or perhaps a quite olive, blush pink or its neon cousin. Or what about teal? The monochrome will anchor the brighter shades and mean that it’s stays relaxing rather than being a sensory overload.

Towel Rack Chair

Sometimes I astound myself with my ability to be practical. To put aside all thoughts of antique mirrored walls and marble worktops and stick to the things that are completely useful. And cheap affordable. Not to mention look good as well. Ladies and Gentlemen, readers and writers, boys and girls, I give you the towel rack chair.

It's just a really simple idea isn't it? But so practical. I have a small chair in the bathroom that I use for dumping  storing things like clothes that aren't ready for the laundry (read: can't be bothered to put away) pyjamas after I've got dressed, the fleece I wear to the gym. You know the sort of thing. All those clothes that are between the wardrobe, the wear and the wash and need somewhere to go because you don't quite want to hang them back up again but then they could go again before they were washed.

Anyway, this chair would mean I could make more of a stab at hanging them, at least folding them nicely over the back and still have somewhere to sit and dry my toes. Or, for course, you could use it as the name suggests and keep your towels over the back. This would mean that the heated towel rail could heat the room rather than just the towels, which would be a novel concept. At least it would in our house. All I'm saying is if you have the chance to put in underfloor heating in the bathroom DO NOT HESITATE. You will not regret this. A heated towel rail is not enough to heat a bathroom. I don't know why I didn't know this.

Now, the other thing about this chair is that it's made from bamboo (terribly eco and sustainable and all that) and it costs £35. Exactly, why wouldn't you? It would work equally well in the bedroom as well as the bathroom. It could double up as a bedside table and you could use the struts to hang books and magazines on.

The one thing about Ikea furniture is the self assembly with the alan keys. What you could do is smear a tiny bit of filler over the metal screws and then sand it down so they disappear and then paint the chair. That would make it look more expensive – and less self assembly and means you could choose the colour you wanted. I fancy it in black, what about you?
