Arne Jacobsen: The New Collection

Design Letters & Friends AJ Royal Vintage Plaid throw

Arne Jacobsen must be one of the most prolific and influential designers of the twentieth century. The Egg, the Swan, the Ant and the Series 7 to name but the chairs. But he also made cutlery, tableware, door handles and lights. Oh and he was also an architect.

He was, in short (and in the nicest possible way) rather a control freak. When commissioned in 1958 to design a new college for Oxford University he added a clause to the contract stating that he should undertake as much as possible of the landscape design and the fixtures and fittings.

St Catherine's College has his door knobs, curtains dyed to the precise shade of grey that he required, even the species of fish in the pond were chosen by the Danish designer. And, in a possible attempt to control Mother Nature he also decided how tall the trees in the quadrangle should be.

He was similarly precise when it came to the design of the SAS Royal Copenhagen hotel in Denmark, where the ashtrays for the gift shop and the cutlery all came from his pen. It was for this hotel that the Swan and Egg were produced. The hotel has changed a little now, but one room remains exactly as he designed it in 1960. And, I can tell you, following my visit there last week, it's quite strange to walk into a room and find it so littered with design classics.

Now the Danish company Design Letters & Friends has used the hotel as inspiration for their latest collection of Arne Jacobsen inspired pieces. The company, founded by Mette and Jacob Thomsen, first produced a series of mugs and bedding based around Jacobsen's hand drawn alphabet of 1937. That range is now sold in 53 different countries.

At lunch in the Royal Copenhagen last week, Mette and Jacob revealed their new collection loosely called The Two Sides of Arne Jacobsen.  The first is Royal Vintage, which includes stationery and a gorgeous Alpaca throw using a design that was originally used for the carpet on the second floor of the hotel. And I wish you could still buy it as carpet because I would definitely love to have it running up my stairs.

The second design seems somewhat unexpected for such a graphically-minded designer but is based on a series of drawings Jacobsen did while in exile in Sweden during WWII. As a Jew, he left Denmark during the war and spent time in Sweden where he created a large number of water colours and floral motifs, including the one you see here, which is the second part of the new collection. This new direction may also, according to Jacob, have had something to do with a girlfriend he had at the time who was "very into textiles and he became very floral during that time".

Design Letters & Friends_AJ Royal Vintage Vases

The black and green vases were originally created for the hotel lobby and Design Letters has put them into production for the first time. The delicate green shade was mixed to Jacobsen's exact wishes and can still be seen in room 606 which remains untouched since he first designed it.

"There is no-one who was as good as him in so many areas," said Jacob at the launch last week. He had very strong intuition and he knew what he wanted." Which may, on balance, be rather an understatement for one who paid such meticulous attention to detail.

Following the success of the typographic collection, Mette said Jacobsen's grandson Tobias contacted her two years ago to ask if she was interested in looking through an old box of his grandfather's "stuff".

"I felt I was being invited to a designer flea market at which I was the only guest," she said.

She selected these two patterns and decided to work with them to take the Jacobsen name forward. Although she admitted there was plenty more in the box. "It was very difficult to choose and Tobias had to ring me more than once to ask for the box back."

But, she assured us, the box hasn't given up all its secrets yet, and there are lots more designs in the pipework as well as everything you see here in these pictures. Obviously I love the geometric designs and I don't tend to think of myself as a lover of florals but I could make an exception for these black and white ones.

The stationery will be sold in Selfridges and the Tate shops and will be in store in the next couple of weeks and the bedding and vases will be sold at Amara so keep an eye out for it landing there. You can see more of the Design Letters collection here.

10 Beautiful Rooms

furniture from alex macarthur

furniture from alex macarthur

Down to earth this Monday after an extremely busy but, the surface at least, glamorous week the like of which I have never had before. In short: a shoot for Habitat on Tuesday, a trip to Copenhagen on Wednesday and the book launch on Thursday. I know it sounds fabulous doesn't it?

image by Brent Derby for country living

by Brent Darby for country living

And it was. Don't get me wrong I did some really interesting things, the results of which you will see on the blog very soon. The flip side was very sore feet, very little sleep and a mountain of laundry waiting for me on Friday.  Ah the glamour.

So I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has bought, read, blogged, tweeted or facebooked the book. I am thrilled to see it receive so much coverage (more is still to come) and I hope you are enjoying it and finding it helpful and useful.

Right then rooms. Beautiful ones. My love affair with the patterned tile continues and these ones above and below are from Fired Earth. My husband said to me in tones of deep foreboding yesterday that "We need to talk about the bathroom".

This means tile hunting. Hurray. We currently have plain white metro tiles in the shower and I think it's time for something more, shall we say, arresting. Metro tiles are classic but they don't stop you in your tracks and I want something, to coin my usual phrase, that makes my heart sing.

I'm actually not thrilled that we are having to redo the bathroom, but it's a truth universally acknowledged that if you buy cheap you buy twice. We bought two bathrooms from Bathstore five years ago and one has already had to be replaced and the second is on its way out.

The basins and the loo are fine. The showerhead, floorstanding taps and shower tray have not stayed the course. Perhaps when we rushed out of the shop crowing that we had fitted out two bathrooms for £3,000 we should have thought a bit more about what that might mean.

hexagon tiles from fired earth

hexagon tiles from fired earth

So, for what it's worth and many of you probably know this already – you need to spend more money on shower trays – the plastic ones can come detached on the base and sort of ripple when you stand on them. Taps, especially if you live in a hard water area where limescale is an issue, need to be well made from quality materials and yes, you gotta pay for that.

So now we have to buy a new shower and new taps for the bath as our floorstanding tap leaks and appears to have jammed on the shower attachment so you can only fill the bath with the shower head, which simultaneously leaks all over the floor. I tell you this, as I said in one of my very first blog posts, so you can learn from my mistakes.

In the meantime, this gorgeous bathroom from the home of designer Faye Toogood is definitely inspiring me. I love the shape of those tiles too. But also look at the hexagonal ones above – that's just a question of layout and you could do something cool with metro tiles, which are very affordable, that would look just as impressive.

Sadly, tiles are the one thing that don't need to be expensive but make all the difference to the overall look of the scheme and is often the place where you want to spaff all the money. Leaving nothing for the working bits like TAPS and SHOWER TRAYS. Bitter? Moi?

Finally, I thought you might like this rather splendid Clerkenwell apartment which has a steel box in the middle to house the media room and bathroom. I love the contrast of the raw materials and the undeniable softness and luxury of that sofa. Wouldn't it be amazing to have room for a sofa that went in different directions?

And on that note I leave you for today. The moral of the Monday is don't scrimp on the important bits. Have a lovely day and I'll see you tomorrow.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Home Secure While on Vacation

Rushing out the door to begin enjoying a vacation can cause people to overlook several easy ways to ensure their homes will be protected. Luckily, we’ll discuss 5 tips for keeping your home secure while on vacation. Read On!

5 Tips for Keeping Your Home Secure While on Vacation

Keep your entryway clean

If solicitors are regularly leaving materials at your door or in your driveway, ask a family member, friend or trusted neighbor to collect these items for you.

Put your newspaper and mail on hold. Most post offices and newspapers will temporarily suspend delivery to avoid items from accumulating in your mailbox or driveway.

Eliminate potential hazards. Unplug appliances and other electronics that aren’t in use while you’re way. Source: Ackermansecurity

Hold Your Mail

Piles of mail and newspapers can make it clear that you are away. While you can temporarily stop mail and newspaper delivery while you’re on vacation, the IntelligentCruiser.com doesn’t recommend this practice because newspaper or postal workers will know you are away. Failing to receive regular deliveries also can tip off burglars that you aren’t at home. Source:OuterbanksVacations

Make Your Home Look Lived In

An occupied home looks lived in. Lights go on and off, and cars come and go. When you’re away, everything stops. To help create the illusion that the residence is still occupied, invest in timers that turn on the interior lights for a few hours every evening. If you can get a neighbor to take out your garbage and put the cans back after the garbage pickup, it’s another way to send the message that everything is proceeding normally at your house. Source: Home.HowStuffWorks

Remove Spare Keys

Remove any spare house keys you may have hidden around your property, including ones in your car or garage, under a doormat, inside a fake rock, under a potted plant, etc. Thieves know all the popular hiding places, so don’t take any chances.

Safe-Keep Your Valuables

Taking the necessary precautions to protect your home while you’re away will save you those worries so you can thoroughly enjoy your trip.

3 Tips in Teaching Kids Effective Security Habits Around the Home

Do your kids know much about home security? Routines are an excellent way to install a good habit within children. These article will cover 3 tips in teaching kids' effective security habits around the home.

Inform them About Security Alarm Basics
If your home isn't already equipped with a home security alarm system, it's advised that you get one as soon as possible. This is especially critical if there are times when your children are unsupervised at home. At this point, there are a number of alarm systems available that are packed with features, even options that make it easier for children to use them. If you plan to purchase an alarm system, hire a certified and fully trained locksmith to install it. Once installed, it's your job to teach your children exactly how the home alarm system works and how to use it. Source:Technofaq

A Go-To Emergency List
This is very important when it comes to providing your kids with the information they need during an emergency. Make a list of all essential phone numbers such as police, fire, poison control, emergency contact cell phone numbers for all family members and so forth. Make sure you show your kids the list and go through it all with them so they know who to call when an emergency happens. Also make sure to put the list in a place that everyone can see it and find it. Source:Besthomesecuritycompanys

Open Door Policy
Before you leave your child home alone, teach them basic home safety practices, starting with keeping the doors locked. Stress that they should never open your home's door to someone they don't recognize, and discuss which family and friends can be let into your home when you're not there.
Tip: If you have a monitored home security system, teach your child how to arm and disarm the system. You might also consider positioning a security camera at the front door so your child can see who is outside without opening the door. Source: Safewise

At a young age, it is a great idea to start building constructive habits that can help a child as they grow. If you want to know more about home security system, please give us a call or email us here.

3 Things Burglars Don’t Want You to Know

Knowing how to stop break-ins isn’t hard and shouldn’t be an all-consuming mission either. Here are 3 things burglars don’t want you to know, including: knowing what to look for, revealing vacation plans and getting an alarm system.

Knowing What to Look For
Even a half-witted burglar knows to check medicine bottles for those diamond earrings, and scour through the sock and underwear drawer for more valuables. But he just might not bother going into the children’s bedrooms.
Even though the sun’s beginning to set, you insist on keeping your blinds up or curtains open to milk what little daylight is left to lighten up the room. Meanwhile, a savvy burglar is strolling about the neighborhood, catching glimpses through windows that he can see through because it’s dusk (let alone night time). This way he can pick easy looking targets or ones with visible valuables. Source:Huffingtonpost

Revealing Vacation Plans
Never reveal your vacation or business tip plans on your Facebook page. Don’t assume nobody could figure out your address just because it’s not on your page.
No errand is too short to leave the alarm system turned off. A burglar can invade your home and steal your valuables in a lot less time than it takes you to run the shortest errand. Products that you don’t have to arm, like the Schlage Touchscreen Deadbolt with a built-in alarm feature, can also help out when only stepping out for a short amount of time. Source: Robertsiciliano

Getting an Alarm System
I don’t want to be noticed. I want to walk in and out as quietly as possible. And to that point, Post the alarm security sign in your front yard. Save us both the time and trouble.
Keep valuables in a safe, and make sure that safe isn’t portable, or it’s coming with me. One of the first places I check is your sock drawer.
Lock doors and windows, even when you’re home. I can slip into an empty room any time. But not if I’m locked out. Source: Alarmrelay

Best Lock for your home: Abloy Protec 2 High Security Deadbolt, My Favourite Lock

Best Lock for your home: Abloy Protec 2 High Security Deadbolt, My Favourite Lock. For further information go to www.mrlocksmith.com

Why do I have an Abloy Deadbolt protecting my house? I train Locksmiths, Military, Police and Government agencies convert and overt methods of entry. The one Deadbolt on the market that has "no known convert" methods of entry and what I consider not only "pick resistant" but "pick proof" is Abloy Protec 2 Deadbolts.

If the I get locked out I know that it will not be an easy job gaining access through my Aboly deadbolt. Most deadbolts and High Security deadbolts can be drilled open is seconds or minutes. I know that I or anybody will be spending alot of time, effort and money trying to destroy my Abloy deadbolt.

The face of the deadbolt has hardened steel and will chew up a dozen expensive drill bits I use to open safes.

Note: most safes are opened with one drill bit.

I have reinforced my door with a Mag Plate that doubles the strength of the door and I have have reinforced the door frame with an 18″ strike with 4″ screws attaching it to the door frame making the door and frame more difficult to force or kick open.

Bottom Line: I want to protect my family, my home and my stuff and I sleep better and go to work or vacation knowing I have the best lock, Alboy deadbolt installed on my doors.

Mr. Locksmith™ is an ABLOY® Protec Authorized Dealer. For further information on Hands-on and On-Line Locksmith training and our famous "Dumb Key Force Tool" go tohttp://ift.tt/1GFfnQ5

The Househunter 26/2/16

2-1462301l-1200x800

So far so ordinary. Well, inasmuch as a three bedroom house in Hampstead on the market with Chestertons  for £3,750,000 can ever be ordinary. I mean, yes, there's a lot of glass and yes, somehow, given the size of it you would expect more than three bedrooms.

1-1462297l-1200x800

But there are three receptions too. Although one of the bedrooms is tiny. And one of the receptions is a conservatory but, wait for it. Getting a hint below.

1-1462295l-1200x800

And there it is. A sunken sitting room with a painted and vaulted ceiling. No, I probably wouldn't either but it's quite an extraordinary thing isn't it? It's Moreton Lodge, part of Moreton House, a Grade II listed building designed by Thomas Gardner in 1896 for Frederik Sidney, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquities and it's 0.2 miles from the centre of Hampstead. Hence the price tag.

1-1462293l-1200x800

So d'ya fancy it or not? What about this then. Now I'm pretty sure you will like this and it's £695,000 via The Modern House. Exactly – quite the bargain, comparatively speaking at least.
d_1JJ3001-950x633

It's a five bedroom house, near Stroud, that was originally built for a cloth merchant and is now two semi detached houses. It has recently been refurbished by Niki Turner.

d_1JJ2931-950x633

The kitchen / dining room is a huge double-height space that formerly served as the house's billiard hall. There is also a mezzanine study area above the kitchen. This is so turning into my ideal house…

k_1JJ2938-950x633

The rooms are spacious, the features are all gorgeous and frankly there's nothing to add apart from perhaps a rug in the sitting room below.

l_1JJ2978-950x633

Do we need a quibble? Probably – if only to console ourselves that we're not going to be able to live in it. Well, two of the bedrooms are pretty tiny. But then if you've got lots of living space that's less of an issue. There's also a conservatory and a ground floor studio space with skylights.

2_l_1JJ2970-950x633

The first floor has three of the bedrooms, the largest of which is the master, and a family bathroom, pictured below, where you can see the bespoke fittings, formed from copper piping, which were designed by Turner.

Add to basket anyone? Race you to the checkout…
