Characteristics of Polyester Carpet

Are you thinking about giving your home a carpet makeover for Christmas? Consider choosing polyester carpet fibers. Here are some of its best characteristics:

Characteristics of Polyester Carpet

Eco-friendly

Many polyester carpets, called PET (polyethylene terephthalate) contain content made of recycled plastics such as water bottles. This can make polyester a “green” option, and also helps strengthen the fiber to help it last longer. Polyester is also naturally stain-resistant and easily recyclable. Source: HouseTipster

Durable

One noted weakness of polyester is that it is not as durable as nylon carpet fiber. Historically, polyester couldn’t come close to the strength of nylon and thus was recommended for lower-traffic areas of the home.

Today due to many technological advancements, the gap between polyester and nylon has been drastically reduced. Manufacturers have been working to improve the performance of polyester, and now polyester is stronger and more durable than ever before. Manufacturers are confident in the longevity of the new polyester, demonstrated by the longer warranties the higher-end polyesters now carry.

Whether its durability can match that of nylon, at this point, only time will tell. With this new generation of polyesters on the market, it will be a few years before we can fully compare their performance against both nylons and polyesters of the past.

Affordable

Relative to nylon, polyester carries a lower cost, due to the lower cost of raw materials and production. Thus, it is a great option for budget-driven renovations, and it offers good value for the money. Polyester carpets are available at almost every price point and quality, offering a vast selection of styles. Source: TheSpruce

Stain-resistant

Polyester is fairly easy to clean. Like olefin, it resists almost all water-based stains but is susceptible to oil stains. Once oil gets into the fibers, it’s difficult to remove. Polyester fiber carpets can shed individual fibers. They may also be susceptible to pilling, in which loose fibers become entangled with each other and form little particles on the surface. 3 Ways to Prepare Your Home for the Holidays

Pretty sure that by now you’ve heard Mariah’s hit song, “All I Want for Christmas is You” playing multiple times. This means that the holiday season is here, and parties will be more frequent from now on. Make sure your home is ready by doing the following tips:

3 Ways to Prepare Your Home for the Holidays

Prioritize the safety of children and pets

Holiday decorations can pose risks to children and pets. Both tend to be attracted to the delicate ornaments hanging on the bottom branches of Christmas trees, for instance, as well as to sparkling tinsel and ribbons that can be choking hazards. Cats may feel tempted to try to climb your tree, and your dog’s wagging tail can easily wreak havoc, too.

To keep your tree safe for pets and small children, stay away from tinsel, and put only shatterproof ornaments within reach of little hands and paws. Keep in mind that some traditional holiday plants can be toxic, including holly (particularly holly berries) and mistletoe, so make sure those are kept out of reach, too. And when it comes to lighting holiday candles, never leave those open flames unattended. Source: MentalFloss

Add a makeshift storage space with a single bar

When you need temporary clothes-hanging space around the house, keep an extra shower tension bar handy. Put it between the jambs in the laundry room door on heavy laundry days. Or, use it in the bedroom closet to pack for trips or stick it in the closet opening in the guest room/den so overnight guests can hang up their clothes. It’s a quick and easy way to gain an extra closet!  Source: FamilyHandyman

Prevent spills before they occur

Limit options but not the fun. Skip serving lots of sticky mixers and dark-colored wines or liquors, which can create tough-to-clean stains. Serve white wine, a sparkling option like Prosecco, beer, and a fun signature drink that you can premix. If you’re set on a festive punch, place the bowl in a non-carpeted space away from high-traffic areas. Source: GoodHousekeeping

3 Tips to Make Your Carpet Look New Again

When your flooring starts to look dull, you don’t have to spend lots of money to liven it up. Following these simple tips will surely take away years of wear and tear:

3 Tips to Make Your Carpet Look New Again

Get rid of stains using shaving foam

First, your carpet probably needs a spot-clean. An easy, low-cost solution to get rid of carpet stains is shaving cream. Spray the stain with some foam shaving cream (not the gel kind) and let it sit for 30 minutes.

Then, blot it with a clean cloth. This solution works on a wide range of stain types, including grease. Before you tackle the stain, do a test patch in an inconspicuous area of your carpet to ensure it won’t cause any discoloration.  Source: CNet

Brighten your carpet using salt

Combine equal parts HOT WATER and equal parts SALT, and apply to your rug with a damp cloth. Although you don’t need an ocean of the mixture applied (it will leave salt deposits that you’ll need to re-rinse out later), you’ll want to use enough that it will transfer from the rag or sponge to your rug. Give this trick a spot test to ensure that your particular rug can take the hot water, though most all rugs are able to hold up to this type of method. If you’re worried, try using a dry towel placed over the areas to help blot any excess moisture back up. Source: ApartmentTherapy

Colour it new

Mix dye according to package instructions. Pre-mixed dye is ready to go, but powdered dye needs to be mixed with water. Use the mixing instructions on the package as a guide, but realize the advantage of powdered dye is your ability to use more or less, depending on the intensity of color you’re looking for.

Apply dye to your carpet or rug. Take your time and apply the dye slowly and evenly over the carpet or rug. Try to avoid going over any area more than once or you’ll have some spots that are darker than others. Source: WikiHow

3 Ways to Clean Carpet without a Vacuum Cleaner

Having carpet at home doesn’t necessarily mean that you also need to have a vacuum cleaner. It could definitely make things easier if you have one, but if you want to skip it or buy one later, then you can do the following for the mean time:

3 Ways to Clean Carpet without a Vacuum Cleaner

Use a carpet sweeper

Sweepers are relatively affordable tools that you simply run across your carpet to help pick up dirt. They do not require electricity and are much quieter than a vacuum, so you can clean anytime and anywhere. Run a sweeper across your carpets for quick crumb removal or dirty shoe trails.

  • Carpet sweepers have brushes that may need to be replaced periodically when they become filthy or too run down.
  • Carpet sweepers cannot handle the dirt capacity of a whole house, so if you’re cleaning each room you may need to clean out the bristles as you go.
  • Empty out the sweeper regularly so you don’t spread dirt around your house instead of cleaning it. Source: WikiHow

Get an old-fashioned broom

If you have a whole carpet to clean, the best way to clean a carpet without a machine is with an old-fashioned broom. It’s important to use one with stiff, natural bristles – a soft synthetic broom just won’t cut it this time.

Whatever comes out of your carpet whilst you’re doing this you’ll need to pick it up. Make sure you have a dustpan at the ready and maybe some rubber gloves for anything that’s difficult to sweep up. Source: Cleanipedia

Deep clean with vinegar

To start, fill the bucket with warm water and ¼ cup white vinegar. Take the scrub brush and dip it into the bucket. Start to scrub the carpet with the cleaning solution. You want enough of the mixture on the scrub brush to get the carpet a little wet, but not saturated.

Once you’ve scrubbed the carpet, empty the bucket and fill it with fresh water. Dip a rag, or terry cloth towel, into the bucket. Ring it out and start to scrub the carpet again. After you’ve made a second pass over the carpet, let it dry thoroughly. To help speed the drying process along, you can turn on a floor fan. Source: TipsBulletin

Nothing beats professional cleaning once in a while to ensure that you get rid of deep-seated dirt in your carpet. Call us to book an appointment, today!
